The Impact Of Gordon Moore and Moore's Law
Moore founded Intel in 1968 with Bob Noyce to make calculator chips. They then went on to design an innovative 256 bit computer memory chip. This was not enough memory to be of much impact at the time but within 4 years they had a chip with sixteen times as much memory which dramatically changed the computing world as we know it.
Impact of Intel Chip
The Intel chip allowed computer designers to create machines that could do more than they had ever imagined. Someone else may have stumbled on the idea within time but it was Moore and Noyce who innovated it and put it into production, changing the way computers worked forever. Now they can handle more and more simultaneous tasks at greater speed. With chips cramming more information onto the same area, Moore announced his theory of computing to come.
Moore's Law
He simply stated that, with technology as it stands, significant technological advances would appear every year (now eighteen months). It insinuates that software can continually be developed even though the machines are incapable of running it, as there will be a machine in the near future with the technology needed.
The Implications of Moore's Law
Moore's Law affects everybody in ways they do not even know. Almost everyone in the world has some information about them stored on a computer somewhere. This can pose a great security risk but can also be extremely beneficial especially in the medical field and the prevention of fraud. It will also mean that lives can be made simpler with the advances in technology meaning that previously impossible or never-ending tasks can be completed in minutes on a computer! An increasing number of day-to-day activities will be automated in years to come meaning self-driven cars, fingerprint access to homes and even more bizarre technology. There are already chips in numerous household items which make life easier and with technology increasing at the rate Moore's Law predicts it will not be long before we notice more changes than we ever dreamed of!
